ELMER GANTRY'S VELVET OPERA 1968 UK DIRECTION STEREO 8-63300 A1-B2 A really stunning sounding uk freakbeat-psych album by the brilliantly named 'Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera'. A long name for a short lived British band that was formed in 1967 during the peak of British Psychedelia, they were definitely one of the most advanced and original bands from their era. The first band name option was to be 'The Velvet Opera', but Dave Terry appeared at one recording session wearing a long black cape and a preachers hat, the band immediately identified him with Sinclair Lewis fictional character 'Elmer Gantry' and in that moment his name changed and the band was baptized as 'Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera'. This album is choc full of brilliant original late 60's psych-freakbeat tunes, it still sounds amazing today, there are no bad tracks on this album at all, the 'prog.archives' site gives this LP a really excellent rating of 4.75 out of a possible 5 and when you hear it you will know why, this is one of my favourite uk 60's albums of all time, if you like the Zombies 'Odyssey & Oracle', early 'Pink Floyd' and bands like Andwella's Dream, uk Kaleidoscope, Skip Bifferty and the Koobas then you will absolutely love 'Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera'.
