1960's Graduates From Laurelton In 'The 60's' Aaronson, Ron - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1967 Currently residing in Armonk, NY Abramowitz, Helene - (Kuskin) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1961 I lived in Laurelton from 1952 until 1965 when I married Larry Kuskin, a graduate of AJHS in 1960. We now live in Boynton Beach, FL.
My address in Laurelton was 135-14 224th Street. My neighbors were Linda Disimone, Michael Fierstein, Ronny Sasofsky, Mitchell Karlin, Arthur and Carol Mack, Andrea Wolpe, Elyse Goldstein - boy so many memories. We are in Florida since 1974.
My e-mail address is larhe31@yahoo.com. Life is great - we are both retired and having fun in our Venetian Isles adult community. Would love to hear from you. Helene Kuskin Abramowitz, Louis - - Andrew Jackson H.S.
- Class of 1963 Currently living in Coral Springs, FL. Lived in Laurelton with my family and brother Martin (on the corner of 232nd St. And 133rd Ave.), from early 1950s through 1969. Attended PS 156, JHS 59 and graduated AJHS in 1963.
Served in Vietnam 68-69 (101st Airborne Division and Bronze Star Recipient). Graduated from Fordham University majoring in Business and Economics. I will never forget Laurelton and all the great experiences that came with growing up there.
Miss all my friends and 'hanging out' at Bert and Dave's on FLB. Abramowitz, Martin - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1964 Still alive & kicking. Laurelton was one of the best places to be at, the right place, at the right time. Like 'Leave it to Beaver.'
My brother is Louie Abramowitz. My cousins are Adrienne Serota & Ronnie Serota. I have lived in Tampa FL for 21 years, with my wife of 40 years. My address was 132-02 232 St.,the corner house down the block from the House of Chang, which my family always went once a week for dinner. Always looking to get a game of softball going after school at P.S.
156 or J.H.S. I was involved in the movement in the 60's & early 70's. Loved the P.A.L.
Softball League, whom many of you guys payed ball in. Remember going to the Laurelton Theatre for the Saturday matinee for.25 cents & getting the card to see if you got in for free the following week. (Except FL.) Take that statement any way you want. 'Life happens when you are busy making other plans.'
If anyone remembers me get in touch. Marty Adler, Frank - - Eastchester H.S. - Class of 1962 Currently living in Saint Paul, MN. I have fond memories of PS 156 and JHS 59, as well as actively participating in USY at the Laurelton Jewish Center, plus singing with Mr Buchanan and doing Gilbert & Sullivan.
My family moved to Eastchester in 1958, so I missed going to Jackson or Far Rockaway. After high school, I went to Antioch College, then got a Ph.D. In political science from the University of Chicago. I returned to teach at Antioch, 1975-95, then was hired by Macalester College in Saint Paul to Chair the Polsci. My time in Laurelton were the happiest years of my childhood; no community I resided in since matched the warmth and nurturing I so fondly recall. Adler, Paul - - Brooklyn Tech - Class of 1960 Currently living in Jericho, NY Agin, Steven - - Brooklyn Tech - Class of 1969 Currently living in Delaware, NJ.
I lived at 226-23 130th Av. From 1952 (age 1) til about 1962 then, 137-14 228th St. Right across from the LJC. Attended 132 until spring of the 6th grade Mrs. Chesler (sp?) (in the photo of Mrs. Kerner's 4th grade class on this site, I'm holding the placard probably to hide the fact that I was not wearing a white shirt - again not wearing a white shirt in Mrs. Buratt's 5th grade class photo, Mrs.
Buratt was NO Mrs. I remember: Rita DeBias, Sharon Bursuk, Gina., Halbert Feinberg, Marshall Krauthamer, Robert Hoffman, Jerry Joseph, Susan Landon, Gary Goldman, Robert Weisbrodt, Tommy Rizzo, Curtis., Herbert Frankel, Bernard Kleinman, Ellen., Susan Klein, Libby Finesmith (what a nice person), Joel Kurtzman, Happy Gold, and Glenda - all in that photo. Though I was not close with almost any of these kids, you can see how vivid are my memories of this time. They are indelible and the heart of life when things were simple but intense. As I read about the reminiscences of others on this site: 132, 156, 'squash' at the handball court, the LJC, Carmine's, Roma's garlic bread (God), the movie theater (which was an addiction on Saturdays, curiously nobody mentioned), the wonderland of Stanley's!, Woolworth's, Bert & Dave's, the Depot, Library, and so many other places and things, I'm struck by how much this place was so important to us because we spent our childhoods there. I wonder what happened to the kids I knew.
They're still kids to me. Along with: Paul Weintraub, 'Logi' Trepper, Barry Becker (a genius/peter pan who dressed as Batman, in his self-made costume and took 'competing' Robins out at night to roam alleys and garage rooftops), John Ploss, Mike Cohen, and others. Aronson, Ilene (Yarkon) - - Hewlett H.S. - Class of 1966 Currently living in Old Bethpage, NY Atlas, Wendy (Sawyer) - - Springfield Gardens H.S.
- Class of 1966 Currently living in Chandler, AZ. (Skip, I see you live in Concord CA, I lived in Novato for 18 years - husband retired and now living in AZ.) Auslander, Judy (Princer) - - South Side H.S. - Class of 1962 I lived in Laurelton until the 9th grade and then moved to Rockville Centre. To this day I talk about growing up in such a wonderful place. Our block, 124th Street & 137th Ave., was loaded with kids and definately the best place for a 'punch ball' game.stoop ball was at my house!
I've recently reconnected with a few Laureltonians and that was lots of fun. I moved to Florida 14 years ago, but now live in PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Avolio, Adrienne (Fama) - - Springfield Gardens H.S. - Class of 1968 Currently living in West Babylon, NY. My name is Adrienne Fama. Back in Laurelton it was Avolio and I lived at137-08 233 St. Back in the 50s, I left P.S.156 and graduated from St.
Clair's in Rosedale in 1964 then went to SGHS and graduated in 1968. This site is fantastic. I remember when I walked to Green Acres, I remember LaTasca Pizzeria and The Pizza King. I lived on 233 St. We also played ball at 156 and The Greens too. I remember House of Change, Laurelton Movies, The Riveria Italian Restarant, The Bagel Store, The Greasy Spoon Dinner, Sherry's Bakery (I worked there.) So many good memories of my childhood.
There's so many times I say I wish I could go back and spend one day of my childhood and see everything once more and all my friends I had, because Laurelton was the greatest town to grow up in. Axelrod, Marc - - Francis Lewis H.S. - Class of 1967 Currently living in Old Bethpage, NY. I moved from Laurelton before the end of high school but have maintained friendships from there to this day. Most wonderful memories of growing up. But we all know that.

My family moved to Laurelton in 1955 and I lived at 131-45 227 Street until I moved away in 1964. I attended P.S. 132 and I am in Mrs. Kerner's 4th grade class picture as well as Mrs. Buratt's 5th grade class picture. I still have the 4th grade picture and remember everyone in the class. I have very fond memories of living in Laurelton.
Who could forget being able to walk to and from school, the movies, the library (and Miss Rand's storytelling), Colony cards, Carmine's, the kosher deli where we had Mrs. Chesler's retirement party.
I stayed on Long Island all my life. I am a dentist and I have 2 grown daughters and 5 grandchildren. I saw many familiar names on the site. I would like to hear from anyone who remembers me.

My address was 139-33-229th Street. I have three younger brothers Richard, Louis and Harry. My husband Jack lived in Arverne in the Rockaways 169th Street and Thursby Ave.
Before that he lived in Springfield Gardens. We met at a Purim dance at the Laurelton Jewish Center Feb. June 1969 we got married and moved to Brooklyn. I have 3 children and 2 grandkids.
I have lived in Bellmore since 1994. I have lost contact with most of my friends from my Laurelton years and it would be nice to reconnect. Some of the people I knew ( can't remember some last names ) were Yvette, Wilma, Eileen Arshansky, Lynette Brown, Marcia or Marsha Eisenberg (from Rosedale). My friend Jessica lived around the corner from me on 139th Street if I am correct. Her mother's name was Marie Kelly and her sister was Debbie Kelly. I introduced Jessica to John E.
Martinson who I used to write to when he was in Viet Nam. He was from Springfield Gardens.
Jessica and John were Married at St. Claire Church in 1970 I think. We lost contact about 20 years ago. John was a mechanic for the Green Bus Lines in Jamaica, NY. Another person was Paul Donados we were suppose to meet in front of St Patrick Cathedral for the year 2000 however I was ill and never made it.
My neighbors were Grace and Herb Pomfrey and my other neighbors were two brothers Stu and David and their sister Wendy. Their mother was Etta (she passed away from breast cancer.

I have very fond memories of Laurelton - a uniquely wonderful small town where close friendships were made. Hard to believe at times that we were situated in NYC. It had more of a Long Island 'feel.' Brickner, Gary - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1967 I'm currently living in Princeton, NJ. My family moved to Laurelton in 1953 when I was 3.
I left for college in 1967. In between I accumulated a wealth of fond memories growing up in Laurelton too numerous to list but probably very similar to others who are on this site. Life revolved around school, the schoolyard, the LJC, little league and later hanging out on Merrick Road at such establishments as Carmine's Pizza.

- Class of 1969 Currently living in New York, NY. Browne, Maureen (Robinson) - - Dominican Commercial H.S. - Class of 1969 Currently living in Phoenix, AZ. I lived at 120-25 237th Street in Cambria Heights actually 1/2 block from Laurelton but all of my friends that I hung out with lived in Laurelton. Our home was located directly across from PS 176 and my neighbors included, the Dawsons, the Whites, the Persons, Russells and the Filippis(on 238th Street behind us.)We had the best childhood ever and growing up in Cambria Heights/Laurelton was terrific and safe.
We moved out in 1973 when my parents moved to Phoenix, AZ and I moved to Bellerose after getting married. One year later I too moved out to Phoenix and have been here ever since.
I loved my childhood and will never forget all my friends who lived there and who I grew up with. Every summer the 'Center' which was located inside PS 176 on the first floor housed all of us and every week day we played ping pong, pool, kickball, basketball, etc.
At lunchtime the girls played records in the cafeteria and we'd dance to the tunes of the 60's as the guys would play ping pong and pool and who would steal glances at us while we danced. I believe the head counselor's name was Mr. Many great summers took place there during the day and then in the 'cement' park after the Center closed at 5:00 p.m. We'd be there until dark and sometimes after dark. There will never be another place like it. Brownstein, Rob - - Andrew Jackson H.S.
- Class of 1963 I'm finally retired at almost 70. Now I have to live for another 30 years to enjoy it:-). It's nice to see I'm not the only one with pangs of nostalgia about Laurelton.
I took my two boys (12 and 14) there in the summer of 2005 to show them the three houses I lived in, the schools I went to, and to share my memories of growing up there. It would have been nice if the 'block busters' had not raped Laurelton and some of our friends and families still lived there. But, that's progress, I guess.
I've been living in California more than half my life, now, but I'm still a Yankee fan and a lover of NY pizza. Some things never change. Buller, Rochelle (Rabeeya) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1967 Currently living in Elkins Park, PA. I was just thrilled to see this website. I have fond memories of Laurelton, riding bicycles, having hoola hoop contests, playing hop scotch. We didn't lock the doors on our homes during the 1950s.
I remember Mr. Yurasits from AJHS. Does anyone remember other teachers Angela Cinque, Martin Groffman, Arthur Bryton, Martin Hohauser, and Mr.Stutz from JCHS 59? And,Lani Guinier as a classmate. I see many familiar names - Arnie Cohen, Bob Kazin, Tom Burke, Iris Schwartz. Thank you for the photos, for the memories and for setting up this website. Burstein, Judith (Fein) - - Andrew Jackson H.S.
- Class of 1962 Currently living in Santa Fe, NM. Hello, all of you who shared in my childhood and teen years.
Would love to hear from you and play catch-up. So many of you have written about SING, and I remember writing those songs and, with Jessie Tillman, leading those fabulous shows. You were the stars. A few of you have contacted me with lyrics--I had forgotten them. Those rhymes make me smile. This site is instant nostalgia. I lived out of the country for l0 years, reside in Santa Fe, am on the road a good portion of the time as a travel journalist and would love--after all the peregrinations--to pick up the thread of connection.

Met a woman of 80+ who lived in Laurelton, went to P.S. 156, graduated from AJHS, and then, like me, went to Queens College, got a doctorate at CUNY and wound up teaching at San Diego State University! Small, small world. Just the other day, a new friend told me his father is a Shakespeare scholar (I'm a theater critic) and that he taught English for years -- at Andrew Jackson HS!! He was the chair of the Dept -- Mr. He's written 50 books, is 93, and about to celebrate his 70th anniversary -- pretty inspiring.
Looking at all those photos brought back a flood of memories. Would love to hear from former SING-sters, or others who remember. Website: Byron, Ralph - - Andrew Jackson H.S.

A few years ago we had a mini reunion at Mark Obenzinger's. It was great seeing Janet Blatt (little), Cora Glasser, Lorraine Leiblein, Jessie Tillman and so many others. I always talk about Laurelton and the wonderful times I had growing up. I'm sorry I had to miss the latest reunion (Oct. 2007) orchestrated by Kenny Trell. I will definitely cancel plans when the next one comes around. I lived in Delaware most of my married life but recently moved to a 55+ community just over the border in Garnet Valley, PA.
I'm learning to play bridge and I'm doing line dancing! It's like camp! I am now inspired to dig out my scrapbooks and photo albums. I could never part with them when I moved. This brought back a lot of memories. Lived on 233rd/Mentone Ave from 1950-1968. My mom sold the house in 74. Played handball all summer in Mentone Park, rode my bike everywhere, even to Rockaway Beach. Rode horses in Whitey's stables and junkyard, went to the Sunrise Drive In. Raabs, and ate the heels from the breads every time I was sent to the bakery.
Married a local, Arnold Moskowitz, at Beth-El. I played a lot of hookey from AJHS, almost all those days spent exploring museums in NYC. We used to skate all day at the roller rink on Springfield, and on the frozen Twin Ponds in the winter. Caught a lot of sunnies there as well.
My best friend was Carol Greenbaum, and the love of my high school years was Howie Barlow. We always had breakfast at the Laurelton Diner before heading home. I recall handing in a permission slip to read books from the adult shelves at the Laurelton Library when I was twelve, and walking home down the middle of 228th Street, between the island trees and the parked cars, scared to death after seeing The Thing at the Itchy.
There was freedom, friends, and security. The schools were good, the housing affordable, and we roamed the whole town. Those were good times. Gonopolsky, Allan - - Andrew Jackson H.S.

My mouth is watering as I type this. If anyone remembers me (which I doubt because I was kinda invisible in those days) feel free to get in touch. My name was Louise Greenhill and I have a brother named Bill.
I now reside in San Diego, California. A beautiful place to live but I do miss my days in Laurelton. Will be glad to hear from anyone who remembers the Greenhill family, including my brother Billy. Greher, Lawrence 'Larry' - - Stuyvesant H.S.

Jill Edelstein, my ex and, more importantly, friend, told me about this site. What a hoot, seeing so many names of so many 'kids' I grew up with, seeing them in my mind's eye as they were then and thinking about so many more whose names I do not see and having it prompt so many memories of our 'small town inside the big city'. My wife of almost 24 years, Bea, and I live in Chester NY, but are in the process of downsizing and eventually looking to go south to the Vero Beach area. Our daughter, Ashley attends Binghamton U. Jill's and my son, Scott, is an attorney in LA. I retired as Associate General Counsel of Avis Budget Group at the end of 2008.
Though I last saw Jeff Goodman in 1986, aside from Jill (and on TV Barbie Seagal Nevins), I can't recall seeing anyone else since the 1984 mass Jackson reunion. I look forward to now keeping up through this site. Gursky, Lorrie (Baron) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1969 I was told of this site by Ellen Skolnick (Schiller) and I am recognizing so many names. I've lived in Pembroke Pines, FL for 26 years.

Hammer, Honie (Abramowicz) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1967 Currently living in Huntington Beach, CA. Harris, Reba (Solomon) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1966 Currently living in Plainview, NY. I graduated from PS 156, from Mrs.
Seligson's 6th grade class, in 1961. Our entire class made 'SP' and that was big news. I remember bringing 'milk money' and 'bank money' and having to freeze for 1 minute when the bell rang outside, before lining up. I remember the strange little garden outside in the playground. I remember indoor recess games, standing on big white circles painted on the black floor. I remember eating lunch in the auditorium with my farmhouse lunchbox and thermos. I really wanted the pink and blue fairytale lunchbox.
At JHS 59 my friends were Rita Simon, Ronnie Kanner, Linda Lee, Naomi Becker, Susan Bayliss and Raymond Wong. We had bus passes for the Q5 that came in different colors each month that we saved. Ronnie and I were bathroom monitors, and someone stole our pocketbooks with our collection of bus passes. I lived at 135-25 227 St.
The boy-next-door was Neal Dreznin, and I sat on the bar of his bike and we rode all over town. Schneider, the 3rd grade teacher, lived on our block. There was an ex-jockey who kept a horse, and occasionally he would drive down the street riding a sulky. On our street we had Barbara and Robert Malkin, Neal Dreznin, David Kaback, David Scher, my family (Reba, Jay and Hope Harris) and more. The boys had endless games of catch and stoop ball. All the kids would play games in the street till the lights came on: I Declare War, Scully, Ringo Levio, Ghost. Then we'd sit on the front porches and play 'Cars.'
Whoever picked white or black was sure to win. In the summer we sold lemonade on Merrick Road, and once we dug up the backyard for a mini golf course, and charged admission to play. I'd like to give a shout-out to Mrs. Rand, the ever-patient children's librarian on 225th St. Our family was a member of the Young Israel of Laurelton. I remember Good Food grocery, Oscar Krieger's butcher, and the printing store where my mom worked with Connie Najmark.
We lived back to back with the Vims, and across from Rabbi Romineck, the Finks and the Benjamins. I remember with fondness these friends from the Young Israel: Paula and Gary Katz, Ruthy & Phyllis Gluckman. Jerome & Barry & Phyllis Schwartz, Rena & Alan Jochnowitz, Eddie Parver, Mindy & Ephraim & Yossi Weinblatt, Stu and Lanny Billauer, Joey Mayerhoff, Lisa Benjamin, Danny & Ira & Philip Goldschmidt, Leslie Pearl, Chaim & Meyer Fisher, Esther Fried, Merrill Silverstein, Sally Rottenstreich, Doris & Michael Kreisler, the Breitbart girls, Marilyn & Kenny Povodator and more. We had Brownies and Girl Scouts and Little League and Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. We proudly marched each year in the Memorial Day Parade.
We had backyard BarBQ's with lots of lighter fluid. We had jobs baby sitting, lawn mowing, delivering newspapers, assisting in youth groups and washing cars. Laurelton was, and is, a beautiful neighborhood, and I have only the best memories. Hart, Mitchell - - Andrew Jackson H.S.

Hellman, Susan (Hall) - - High School of Commerce, NYC - Class of 1963 Hi, I sent information asking to find some people. I was very young (13) when I left Laurelton. My brothers still know people from their age group (18 when one left Marc Hellman) and my brother Kenny (Kenneth) married (Sheila Hasterlik) and graduated Andrew Jackson, he was 22 when I left Laurelton and moved to Florida. I know some names - Lawrence Galinkin (who became a pediatrician) actually joined my pediatricians office in Plainview, Long Island when I first married. Which was a funny story; but I have never connected with other people that I just remember their names - Arlene Epstein - lived on Francis Lewis Blvd; and Carol Caldwell - I went to P.S. 176 and 147 - started Andrew Jackson and then moved to Florida.
Came back to New York finished high school in Manhattan; and then moved to Plainview, Long Island; now live in Phoenix, Arizona. I have 5 children; 8 grandchildren. Jacksier, Diane (Wilner) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1965 Currently Living in Old Bethpage, NY.
I lived in Cambria Heights but hung out in Laurelton all the time. Along with many other gitls we started a sorority in college that hosted many dances. I grduated from Queens College in 1969.
I remember studying in a Laurleton park and watching the planes coming in for a landing. They were so far down that we could almost see the passengers. Johansen, Karen (Riesterer) - - Andrew Jackson H.S.
- Class of 1962 Currently living in Newtown, CT. I too have fond memories of growing up in Lauelton/Springfield Gardens. It was truly a melting pot and a great place to grow up. How about memories of JHS59? We were the first class to graduate and I remember carrying books from 132 to 59. Do you think they could get away with that now? I looked at the June '56 photo from PS 132, but I didn't find myself or Lee Madison or John Marshall.
Does anyone have the names to go with the photo? I don't remember the picture being taken, but there is a lot I don't remember. I do remember Mrs. Joseph, Jerry - - Canarsie H.S. - Class of 1969 Currently living in Sunny Isles Beach, FL Laurelton was the very best community in which to have grown up.
The memories of being able to gather any number of friends at a moments notice for stoopball, triangle, 4 corners or football are everlasting. I recall the spin the bottle parties in my basement at 130-41 226th Street with Happy Gold, Frieda Baron, Gina Weitzenkorn, Sheila Orlick, Susan Landon, Sharon Bursuk, Gary Goldman, Joel Kurtzman, Marshall Krauthamer, Halbert Feinberg and Robert Hoffman. Where has the time gone? What did we know of the cut-throat business world back then?
I hope that everyone is happy and well and I look forward to hearing from anyone interested in keeping in touch. Kaikow, Rita - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1964 We moved to Laurelton/Springfield Gardens when I was about 6.5yrs. I started second grade at PS 37.
We lived on 137th Ave. Between 221st and 222nd St. My brother, Howard, who passed away, went to Stuyvesant HS after graduating from PS 37. He lived in New Hampshire. My parents were very active in many of the local organizations. They helped establish the Jewish Community House which was located on 223rd.
When it combined with the LJC, they continued their active role. Life was fun and full of activities. Do you remember the AV Squad and walking up the down staircases in JHS 59? I was in the Choral Music class that studied French. If I had to do it over, I would have opted for Spanish. Those who were in the class will understand why. After graduating from AJHS in 1964, I moved on to Queens College where I got my BA in Elementary Education and Master of Library Science degrees.
I taught second grade for two years. After receiving my MLS, I was hired in as the Library Media Specialist on the staff of Oceanside HS where I remained until my retirement two years ago. We moved from Laurelton in 1977 and settled in Franklin Square, NY where I am now living. I'd love to make re-connections. Kanofsky, Joanne (Savitz) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1967 Currently living in Freehold, NJ.
Hi all, it was great to read all the comments and it brought back many memories. I was in a sorority at Andrew Jackson High School and can't remember the name of it. I do remember the sweater was white and red. Anyone remember?
Kaplan, Alison (Dillworth) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1966 Currently living in Huntersville, NC. Although Laurelton wasn't my home address, I grew up in Springfield Gardens and Rosedale, I spent my Jackson years with my friends from Laurelton and from the temples my family belonged to, first the JCC on 223rd and then Temple Beth El on 232nd. I have many of the same memories of all the great places along the boulevard (especially the ones where we could EAT.the bagel bakery, Carmine's, Wong's Garden and take out, Capri, House of Chang, the great bakeries and those amazing pickles from the Kosher Deli, Lil Eds/Burt&Dave's, Marder's (where we would buy our hair dye, but don't tell our mothers.
LOL), Colony Card Shop, Pompie's Hair Dresser, and of course Woolworths, of parties in the basements of some friend's houses and Temple Hopping on the High Holy Days. Along with those fond memories are those of the days I spent at Jackson, starting as a Freshman in September of '62 meeting lots of my classmates through SING, even those in the other class years.
I was thrilled to have relived some of the fun times back then when we had our reunion back in 2000 and were able to have a tour of Old Hickory which I am glad to report was in much better shape than it had been while we were there in our youth. It was before school had started again so everything was so pristine, the brass railing on the marble stairway near the auditorium was gleaming, there was no smell of stale socks in the locker rooms and the bathrooms, although still the same as when we were there, were clean and in great shape. I hope to post some pictures of both Jackson and Laurelton taken back then. If you are not on our Jackson Alumni Database, please contact me so we can get you listed so you don't miss the next reunion.
We had classmates from the 60s decade and some two dozen faculty members as well. We had our Jackson friends from all the neighboring communities that attended our school, those from every club, sports team and SING, team captains and participants alike all having a great time talking about their days at Old Hickory.

I still see Leslie Popoff, my best friend from P.S. 176, when I visit NY. Katz, Arthur - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1967 Currently living in Clifton Park, NY.
At the age of one (or so I'm told) we moved to 235-15 129 Ave. Outdoor activities kept us busy when not in school.
After any measurable snowfall I remember riding our sleds down the hill on 130 Ave, which was really part of an overpass for the Cross Island Parkway. As we got older it was stickball games in the street, then Little League baseball. College and work relocated me to the Saratoga region. If any Laurelton alumni are in the area, drop me a line (I think I just dated myself - send me an e-mail).
Katz, Helene (Halitzer) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1966 Currently living in Carle Place, NY. I had some great friends in Laurelton, and would appreciate connecting with them. Laurleton afforded us a life, where our parents didn't have to worry if we were 'missing'. We were over someone's house. A 500 mile trip back to Laurelton. I lived in New Jersey for 18 years.
Then we packed up our two daughters and in 1990 relocated. Now my girls are grown, one married with two boys a lived nearby and my other daughter is married and lives in Washington DC. In 1990 I graduated from Rutgers University.took me a while. But that was something I needed to do.now I am the Director of a Resettlement program. I work with Jewish Family Services. But resettle refugees from all over.
I have been married for 26 years. I guess that's about it. Kazin, Philip - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1962 Currently residing in Dix Hills, NY.
Will supply more bio info shortly. Just found this website courtesy of my younger brother, Bob. We lived at 226-10, 137 Avenue, just 2 and 1/2 blocks from 156 where we played after school at softball, stickball etc. Younger brother Bob lives upstate in Clinton, NY. Older sister Adele lives in NJ. The wonderful and strong memories of 156, the schoolyard, LJC on the High Holy Days, the Jackson orchestra and tennis team, and Sing, the sense of community, are almost too overwhelming to describe.
I would love to hear from old friends. Kazin, Robert - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1967 Currently living in Clinton, NY. This is just a great website! After my sister Adele and my brother Phil, I graduated from Jackson in 1967. We lived at 226-10 137 Ave.
My most vivid memories involved playing various sports at the corner of 224 Street and 137 Avenue. Depending on the season, it was touch football or street hockey, along with other games and sports, and fellow participants included Jim Aswad, Ira Barouch, Hyman Copio, Larry Landau, Jerry Scheinman, Barry Lipman, and Robert Sugarman among others. We also played our version of 'squash' which involved hitting a tennis ball against the wall in the schoolyard at P.S.
That has carried over into my current passion of racquetball. Growing up in Laurelton was wonderful, although I currently prefer the small town feel in upstate New York. I would love to hear from any of you from my era. Keller, Aline (Leo) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1960 Living in sunny Sherman Oaks, California but planning to attend Laurelton Reunion in NY, Oct.
27, 2007 with my Laurelton friends, OPL sisters and contemporaries. Please join me. Kerner, Laurie (Beller) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1964 My name is Laurie Kerner Beller and I'm currently living in Woodbury, NY.
Recently found the web site, and it was fun going down memory lane. I lived in Rosedale, but most of my friends were Laureltonians. I graduated Andrew Jackson in 1964, and was very active in Sing. I think I still have the old sing buttons we wore.I attended a 60s reunion a number of years ago,but found it was hard to make a connection, tons of people attended, and it was kind of disorganized. Is there another comning up?
Would love to hear from someone. Kessler, Sandra (Brandt) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1960 Currently living in Tamarac, FL. Looking for my old friends. I was in ADG and am in touch with several classmates around the country.
I am a recent widow and am looking to reconnect to that wonderful, magical, happy, pure (did I say wonderful) Laurelton time. I have lived in Florida since 1973. My brother is Henry Kessler, class of 58. Kestenbaum, Claire (London) - - Andrew Jackson H.S.
- Class of 1965 Currently living in Coral Springs, FL. I am so pleased to have found this Web Site. It has brought back so many happy memories. I loved my years at Andrew Jackson and would love to connect again with my friends. I also would love to find my sorority sisters from OPL. I was married for 40 years when my husband died. I'm so thrilled to have discovered this site. My parents and my brother, David, were already living in Laurelton for several years when I was born. They first lived in a rented house, then bought the house across the street, at 130-24 230th St. I dream about that house and that block often.
I lived there until 1970; my parents moved to Connecticut in 1972. I attended PS 156, Hebrew school at LJC, JHS 59, and Andrew Jackson, class of '64.
My brother was class of '57, and he married Marcia Silverstein, class of '59. Favorite teachers at Jackson: Mr. Jacobson; Mrs.

Long time listener, first time caller. Have had many chances to read everyone's memories about Laurelton. It truly was a 'wonderful town'.
I have been living in Woodmere for over 30 years and I am now starting to refer to the homes on the block by the names of the original neighbors from when we moved in. I still go through the old neighborhood when I get stuck in traffic on the LIE and always manage to cut thru Francis Lewis to get to my old block on 226th St. As I drive down the street I recall Goldberg, Levy, Epstein,Dubin, Tuchfeld, Klein, Arem, Braun, Gursky. These are just some of the names of my neighbors I've seen on the website.
Best of all, I can still remember the good times. It was a dead end street next to Brookville Park where my brothers and I pretty much ran free. I took years of dancing lessons from Mrs. Pendel, a wonderful teacher and choreographer. First job was working at the Laurelton Bagel Bakery. I only hope my children remember growing up in Marietta, Georgia with the same warmth I have for Laurelton. Lane, Gary - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1962 Currently living in Irvine, CA.
Just found this site by chance. No one could ever forget Laurelton. Moved there at age 2 from the Bronx and stayed until graduated Queens College at age 20.
Went to 156 and then 59, the opening class. Hope my name is still on the honor roll board at Jackson. Got my first car while living there.
A red 64 Pontiac Lemans, 4 on the floor. Remember a friend dropping me off after he picked up the stick shirt with me, telling me I would learn how to drive a stick in 1/2 hour on my own. Had to in order to get home from the belt overpass he left me off on. Remember taking the city bus to Rosedale and walking to Green Acres to save the extra fare on the bus to the center. Two hours on 2 buses to Jackson. Moved to San Diego after QC.
It too was a small town back in 69. Reminded me a bit of Laurelton until it grew too big. Never forget the hot bagels at the back door of the bagel shop, and the salami and eggs for breakfast at the deli, or the cookies at the 4 star bakery. Got all my school supplies at Woolworths and enjoyed the 10 cent Sat movie matinees. Wonder what my first love, Zina Steinberg, from Kindergarten ended up doing. Or that tease, Linda Hamburg. Never forget Judy Perchick who all I could do was enjoy looking.
Remember running around the school yard at 59 racing the track stars. Also remember helping with a campaign for school president for Keith (forgot last name) at Jackson.
Laurelton was a great place to grow up, from helping the kids at 156, as a school crossing guard, to eating that corned beef at the deli every week, to knowing every kid in town and never having to worry about a bully, but only having friends wherever you would walk or ride on your bike, to seeing the ducks at the pound at the Laurelton Parkway. I moved from San Diego to Virginia, to Tulsa, to Los Angeles, to Irvine. Irvine is great.
It too is a very small town in a circle of big cities. Have a great home across from a nice park/pool/sport field. Now the owner of a law firm in Santa Ana, helping homeowners save their homes. We sue more banks than any firm in California. Now helping a 100 year old veteran from WWII, whom Deutsche Bank wants on the street.

Leventhal, Stu - stu@lexicon-nyc.com - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1965 I grew up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn and moved to Laurelton in the fall of 1958 – entering 5th grade at PS 156. It was a bit of culture shock. In Brooklyn I was one of the smartest kids in my grade – in Laurelton I was not. And in Brooklyn there were few social events – in Laurelton we had “boy/girl parties” weekly and my new friends all had noticed the opposite sex.
I still remember my surprise at the changes in my young life. Laurelton was an idyllic place to grow up – we weren’t the city – and we weren’t the suburbs. It was a good mix. My friends included the Wanderman twins/Chuck Cohen/Harvey Benenson/Bob Warshaw/Ken Patick/Jay Green/Cuthbert Simpkins and many many others. I was also friends with Betty Lesser/Andrea Port/Adrienne Rubin/Sue Schwartz/Barbara Kreidman/Michelle Cohen/Pat Burstein and many others. I dated Esther Globman - reconnecting with her some years later.
After Andrew Jackson High School I went to Queens College where Peter Madoff was President of my fraternity. I worked in network television – ABC for a while – later WPIX TV and got involved in creative communications – finally becoming Creative Director for Advertising Promotion at Merrill Lynch. I’ve been in print and design communications since and have had my own company for many years. I recently taught at FIT and currently also teach at New York University. My sister Marjorie and I recently sold our family’s home on Francis Lewis Blvd.
After our dad’s passing at 97 years of age. Our parents still lived there until the end. I’m married to a wonderful woman – Lisa – and have 2 grown sons.

I was a principal and an area director and now my husband Larry and I plan to travel and do some consulting work. I have fond memories of Laurelton and made many friends that I am still in close contact with today, Judy Gursky (Karlinsky), Rochelle Goldberg (Edelman), and Audrey Schatzberg (Ferraro). I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. Lewis, Bradley - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1968 Hello. I lived at 139-34 225th Street.
My mother was in the real estate and insurance business, and for a time was secretary of the Laurelton Civic Association. I loved my somewhat idyllic childhood and spent tons of time in the school yard at P.S. I moved to Manhattan in 1971, where I ultimately worked as a playwright, actor, and root canal specialist. I now reside in Beverly Hills, CA. My old telephones were LA 7 -6313 and LA 7 - 8042. Sorry, they don't call forward to my cell phone! Lindenman, Carl - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1960 What a trip finding this site! I recognize the names of those who used to play punchball at PS156 and I see some of my 'brothers' of Sigma Phi. Do you still fit into your fraternity sweater?

Graduated from PS 176 in 1960.
Did not go to Jackson because I wanted to pursue design and engineering @ Newtown HS and then Architecture at Pratt Institute. I stayed in Laurelton until 1964. My memories of having many friends on every block remains such a great experience. As others have said, I only wish my children had the same moments in time that I had. It is so hard to explain to others about life growing was like. I am enjoying a wonderful life in South Florida, have a great wife and wonderful children and grandchild. If you remember me and care to say, 'Hello,' It would be my pleasure to email, write, call or meet.
Hope everyone is well. Website: Lipson, Eileen - - Elmont H.S.
- Class of 1969 Currently living in Stuart FL. Hi all, I did not grow up in Laurelton, but my parents did. My dad, Norman Lipson graduated from Andrew Jackson in the mid 40s and my mother graduated from Far Rockaway in the late 40s.
Her name was Charlotte (Shai) Kane. I grew up in N. Valley Stream and graduated from Elmont in 1969. I had numerous friends from Laurelton because so many people went to Treasure Island Day Camp in Oceanside. I am looking for Esther Globman (I don't know her married name!). Someone from Florida said he had heard from her.
If you can get a message to her from me, I'd really appreciate it. My grandfather made me go to House of Chang every Sunday and buy an extra bag of spare ribs that we would eat in the car on the way home.
Thanks for any help. Lipton, Nancy (Carlson) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1967 It's great to 'see' so many of you on this website! I'm living in Silver Spring, Maryland, after having come here for grad school. Hope to hear from some of you.
LoMaglio, Phyllis (Snook) - - Jamaica Voc. - Class of 1967 Currently living in Middleburg, PA. I went to a public grammar school in Laurelton but do not remember its name. I know it was very close to where I lived which was 221-13 133rd Avenue & I know I left the school after the 2nd grade as I was then put in a Catholic school 'St.
Mary Magdalene' in Springfield Gardens. I have been looking for old photos of the street I lived in & also for some of the people I grew up with. I had so many friends during the 13 years I lived in Laurelton & lots of wonderful memories as well & would love to hear from anyone who can help me refresh my memories.
Now that I live with my husband on a large farm in PA, I have many hours & time to sit & remember my past. Anyone willing to write to me is very welcome to. Lopardo, Joe - - Andrew Jackson H.S.

Gary Weinstein, Danny Hersh, Larry Shaw, Ronald Aaronson, Arnold Cohen, just to name a few. Machtay, Henry - - Springfield Gardens H.S. - Class of 1968 135-01 226th St, moved from Brooklyn in 2nd grade; I remember P.S. Gambino; JHS 59 Mr.
Morris; SGHS Mr. Katz, literary magazine, first yearbook, Bye Bye Birdie; United Synagogue Youth. Great irony: some classmates wrote in my yearbook that I'd become an art teacher. At age 50 when the dot-com bubble burst I became a teacher; I'm now in charge of Academy of Information Technology at Galileo Academy (a public high school), San Francisco; I teach Web Design & Video (so I am technically an art teacher). Being a teacher has brought great joy and meaning into my life; I love my kids, my school, my colleagues, and I've never been happier to go to work each day. Also, I grew from a little feigele in Laurelton to a furry old gay bear in San Francisco.;-D Mack, Arthur - - Springfield Gardens H.S. - Class of 1968 Currently living in Ridgewood, NJ.

I remember her house and going down stairs to dancing lessons and the great recitals!
Each costume was made by a lady in Rosedale! I remember Mrs. Pendels son, I think it was Vinny and he was a talented musician. I was Donna Maller then and just loved living in Laurelton. I went to 156, 59 and Jackson 1967. Hanging out at Burt and Dave's in the 60's, drinking egg creams.
Bowling in Rosedale Lanes and J & S PIZZA THE BEST square Pizza ever made!!!! I had my sweet sixteen at the Pizza King, it was fun! I also remember ice skating at Brookville Park, and Twin Ponds. So many memories, I moved in 1988 to Thousand Oaks Ca. I lived at 137-11 225th Street until 1973 when I moved to Kibbutz Kfar Bkum in Israel. Returned to Laurelton in 1977 and stayed until 1980's when I moved to Rosedale (near the Blum Paper Factory).
IN 1988 we moved to Thousand Oaks, Ca. WE love it but my memories of Laurelton are still very strong! Have a lot of fond memories of growing up in Laurelton. I am still friendly with quite a few friends that I grew up with. My brother, Leon and his friends Sandy Pukel and Larry Krug are here in Florida as well. Mayer, Marilyn (Paul) - - Andrew Jackson H.S.
- Class of 1961 Currently living in Pompano Beach, FL. Mayo, Bill - - Springfield Gardens H.S.
- Class of 1968 Currently living in Plainview, NY. I moved to Laurelton when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I guess I spent about 15 years there - going to PS 156 - JHS 59 and finally SGHS (in the first graduating class 1968). I have fond memories of my street - 228th with the grass malls down the center.
I made many lifelong friends and enjoyed just playing in the streets. McComb, Diane (Vandermark) - - Baldwin Senior H.S. Class of 1962 Currently living in Old Town, FL. I lived in Laurelton from birth in 1945 till 1956 when we moved to Baldwin. My brother Larry was supposed to start at AJHS that year, and I was in 6th grade at P.S. We lived at 133-30 222nd St.
Just off Merrick Rd. I remember a huge lighted billboard next to our house and a haunted house next to that, before they excavated and built a supermarket on that corner. My father always said Willie Sutton had buried a bank haul over there; wonder how he knew?
I remember fondly the Penny Man, the Laurelton Theater and the Laurelton Bagel Bakery where they would toss hot fresh bagels at us out the back door. I can still taste them today, wish I could get my hands on some. I lived at the library where I read every animal book in the place. I belonged to the Girl Scouts but the only names I remember are my bud Patty Watson, the Kreglers across the street from us, and Marion Edelson, my best friend. My dad was a good friend of the Zickermans. I remember Mrs. Flinker, the principal, from school, and Mrs.
Burouco (sp) was my second grade teacher, I think. I remember the graveyard on the way to St. Albans school dentist, but not fondly.
Our Evangelist Church bought the Synagogue on 223rd St. And I recall a shingle throwing fight with the Jewish kids who did not want us there! My brothers left me to be beaten up by them, again, not a fond memory. I still have a scar on my cheek, 58 years later.
I remember the innocence of growing up in Laurelton, the street games till the lights came on and it was time to come in. There were eventually six of us kids, though only five were born when we lived there. Thanks for letting me take this mental journey back to Laurelton, and for the pictures. McQueen, Kathy (Kendall) - - Class of 1963 Attended P.S. 156 1955-57, Miss Postley for 5th grade, Mr. Gambino for 6th, before my (military) family was transferred to Hawaii. My best friend was Ronni Halpern, and I would love to hear from her again.
Lived on 229th St. Between the Schwartz and Sidikman families. I love the website, especially the re-creation of Merrick Road.
Haven't had an egg cream since 1957 but will never forget them. I'm in Portland, OR now, a retired college professor of English and drama. Mendelsohn, Ronnie (Sachs) - - Andrew Jackson H.S.
- Class of 1960 I live in Aventura, FL. I am a succssful realtor and sell real estate from Palm Beach down to South Beach.
Laurelton, as you all remember, was a very special place to live. I am still 'best friends' with Nina, remember her? Drop by, I'd love to hear from you.Website: Menist, Bernard - - Thomas A. - Class of 1962 My name is Bernard (Bernie) Menist. Lived at 133-20 224th St. I lived in Laurelton from 1957 to 1964, when I got married. I have 3 sons, Samuel, David and Robert.
I am retired from the NY Telephone Company since 1989. (I hope Skip with not only update my registration, but add it to this one). I was the fat kid that no one liked or was willing to help in school and got laughed at for asking. In the Class of 59 at JHS 59 I was treated extremely wrong.
But I would still love to hear from those who remember me from school, hanging around and racing up and down Merrick Rd. Laurelton Pkwy (our drag strip) where we marked a quarter mile with a 12 inch ruler one night when we were all drunk. The guys who I had for friends then were: David Pick (who I hear from time to time), Kenny Steinberg, Matty Tausk, Ray 'Stretch' Smudis (not sure of spelling), Edwin 'Teddy' Behyr, Billy Greenhill, Jerry Taglavia (Valley Stream), Artie Tabled (deceased), Ronald (Chuck) Jacoby (deceased), my late brother Phil Menist (deceased 1992), Lenny Panzer and his twin, Howie, Barry Dickman. Some of the girls I knew then from school and around town were: Alison Kaplan (Springfield Gardens), Barbara Friedman (223rd st. Next to JCH) Paula Wilk, Arlene Feldman, Sandra Kumm, Sandra Spero and many more.
I'd love to hear from all who remember me friend or foe at that time. Menist, Philip - c/o - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1964 - Deceased This entry is in memory of my brother, Philip Menist, who passed away in February 1992, and resided at 133-20 224th St. At the time of his death he owned a bagel bakery in Great Neck and lived in Little Neck.
He is survived by his wife, Natalie and son Steven, who now run the bakery. Phil was always big for his age and if anyone wants more information they can contact me at my email address above. Merein, Marvin - - Andrew Jackson H.S.
- Class of 1967 Currently living in Irvine, CA Mernelstein, Robin (Grenell) - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1968 Hi Skip, I am Robin Mermelstein Grenell. Graduated AJHS 1968.
Now I live in the Bronx. Not only do I think about the Laurelton of my childhood often, but I go there regularly. My mother Adele still lives on 229th Street, in a beautiful Tudor style attached house, between 130th and 131st Avenue! Sunken living room and two fireplaces. My father, Elliott Mermelstein, was a lawyer who was a leader of the local Democratic Club, and he was on the Community Planning Board. He loved the house he struggled to buy, and he spent his last weeks there before he died at the end of 2003. A while back, a man came to see our house, the one his parents sold to us in 1960, just to take a look.
I'm not surprised to find this site. When we moved to Laurelton I was 10, and I used to leave my bicycle on the porch over night, and I ran around the neighborhood all summer with my friends. My mother never worried.
We are a few doors from the Edelson sisters (Susan, Marion, and?), the Seid brothers (Paul, Steven, and?), across from the Grabonicks, and also neighbors to the Weissman family (Fredda, David and Judy) and the Kellers (Matty and Eileen). 156 for fifth and sixth grade. Miller, who told us her family called her 'Helen Pelen the Watermelon' because she had a big stomach. She drove a beautiful Raymond Lowey designed Studebaker.
On our class trip to Idlewild Airport, we were looking down through the glass wall into the customs area, when Mrs. Miller started screaming and running to the staircase. What a sight! Thirty kids running after their teacher. It was Rosalind Russell.
Jet black hair and white mink coat. So glamorous. Miller was falling all over her. Does anyone remember?
Noble in sixth grade. Morris at JHS 59. He exposed me to Shakespeare, and translated the period English into something I could understand. I felt very grown up in his class. He treated us kids with dignity. So many names mentioned here are familiar to me.
Ran into Haren Flaxman at a bar mitzvah years ago. I recognized her immediately. Some of my other friends were Lila Drexler, Paula Zagon, whose brother came home from the Army and immediately bought himself a red corvette convertible that he gave us a ride in. Laura Mevorah, where are you? Judy Becker had a beautiful beagle, Larry Traiman lived on my block and was always walking his two freshly coiffed, regal standard poodles.
Bradley Lewis sounds familiar. There was also David Bergman. Kirby Leeds lived in a Tudor on 226th Street. Her mother was Suzanne Pleshette's cousin, I think. In high school, Nancy Decker was dating Warren Glazer. Saw Carol Celantano years ago when she was selling art downtown. We belonged to the Jewish Community House.
Iris Krichevsky, Norah Schwartz and I were the three girls who went through Hebrew school together. Cantor Boris Fish taught us for our Friday night bat mitzvahs.
He died a few years ago, and my mother and I made a shiva call to his children. After us he landed a full-time job in Huntington, where he was very beloved. I was also Rabbi and Joyce Millstein's Friday night babysitter. Their family life was joyful and devoid of anxiety. It was wonderful to know them.
At Jackson, I too loved Mr. He retired as a principal a few years ago, and I would love to tell him to his face how easy he made Geometry. He taught us about loci by posing a problem for 'The Man From Uncle.' Remarkably, he graded everyone's homework every night, and he was available for tutoring early each morning. I was a newly minted A math student in his class. There were other great teachers who names escape me. My history teacher was a Wilson Fellow who translated German documents in WWII, and met Chang Kai Chek.
He told wonderful stories from his life. I am thrilled that I sat next to Lani Guinier ('67) in one of our classes.
It blew me away when she got into Radcliffe. I didn't know one of us was thinking about Harvard. I recognized her immediately when Pres. Clinton nominated her to run the Civil Rights Division in the Justice Department (and abandoned her before she even appeared to defend her views). And I poured over her life story when it was published in the NY Times magazine.
A few years ago I met her younger sister Marie in a class we both took at the New School. Marie's first question was, 'Were you in Sing?' Sing was one of our favorite high school memories. Richard Seltzer was in a lot of my classes.
Magidson directed 'The Man Who Came to Dinner'. Claudia Lahti, Happy Gold, Ellen Glick, Barbara Hyman, Diane Wunderlich, Louisa Cohen, Pam Chapman (Rev. Chapman was the minister in the Lutheran church on 228th Street), all classmates. Passed Donna Diamond on the street in Riverdale, but didn't place her until later. Penny Demas turned up as a patient in my husband's neurology practice.
Does anyone remember Dr. Fine, the family practitioner on 225th Street? He made house calls in his huge Cadillac El Dorado. It was a mile long. Everyone else here talked about the stores on Merrick Boulevard.
I'll just add that Zicky's son closed the store not too long ago after a Home Depot opened nearby. Some of you made reference to the pain of integration, and the white flight that took place in Laurelton.
It was painful for my parents to witness other Jews, so close to the experience of being pariahs in Europe, trying to run from the negative changes taking place in the society at large. My father and others worked very hard to try to keep the community from 'tipping.' I am glad to say that there were other couples, like my parents, who decided they loved their homes, and planned to age in place.
In fact, my mother has black neighbors who are now living out the same pattern of buying a home, and aging in place. Some of my parent's first black neighbors are still her neighbors. These are the people I call to run across the street when my mother's phone is off the hook.
Things change, and things stay the same. Thank you, Skip, for opening this window to the past. I would love to hear from my friends.
By the way, I am teaching English as a Second Language at Concordia College, in Bronxville. Mesh, Joel - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1964 My family moved to Laurelton in 1949. We lived at 134-19 234th Street, Laurelton. I graduated from AJHS in 1964; received an AAS degree from New York City Community College in 1966; a B.S.
From Oklahoma State University in 1969 and an MBA from Pace University in 1974. I worked at Pepsi-Cola Company for 34 years in various sales and marketing roles and retired in 2007.
Currently, doing consulting work for various Pepsi distributors. I am living in New Fairfield, CT. Mevorah, Alan - - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1964 I would love to hear from anyone from the Laurelton area who shares memories with me. Or if you are now in the Levittown Long Island OR Tampa Bay Florida areas. Or share my hobbies: street rods, Corvettes, 1960's cars, Harley Davidsons. Or just about any reason!!!
Michaelson, Jeffrey - lbfd233ejm@att.net - Andrew Jackson H.S. - Class of 1963 Hi Skip, I am Jeff Michaelson, currently lising in Delray Beach, FL and lived in Laurelton from 1945-1972, starting on Mentone Ave. Just two houses east of 228th St.
In that one story bungalow on the north side next to the Pasanisis. I hung out with Mike Solomon and Harold Mossberg. We moved to 229-09 137 Ave.
Across from PS 156 in 1954 using the telephone number LA 5-4814. I hung out with Mark Gottlieb, Elliot Brass and Myron London who lived around the corner on 230th St. We used to flip baseball and Davey Crockett cards, play punchball and stoop ball on Marks stoop. Also played stickball and chinese handball called (aces) asses up in 156's schoolyard. Scharf in the 6th grade 1957, JHS 59 1960 and AJHS 1963. On Merrick Rd.
And 230th St., SE corner we had Shep's dairy next to the paint/hobby story. A&P on the same block with the Ridgewood s/b on the corner at Francis Lewis Blvd.
On the SW corner of 230th st there was Granados Appliance store where I got my first transister radio. Next door was an ice cream parlor where the sold loosie cigs.
Next was the Bohacks. Lil Eds was on the NW corner of Merrick and Francis Lewis where Mr. Scharf used to sit at the counter drinking two cent plain seltzer and reading the daily racing form. The older guys with the engineer boots, leather motorcycle jackets and DA haircuts used to sit on top of the bench back rest in front of the store. Cokes were a nickel and the little larger glasses were a dime so we used to order two small cokes for a nickel apiece. Going west along Merrick was Stanley 's where I aquired my Hardy Boys series of books. Still on the north side was Sharry's bakery and Rael Drugs.
I forget where Four Star was. Going west was the 5&10 along with Schultz's candy story and further down Zuckerman's hardware where everything was all over the place and you had to get the store help to find anything. How about the oiled wood creaky floors in there. I remember paying 25 cents for a haircut at Tom's Barber shop on the side st. Where they put that green sticky stuff on your hair. Tom also made house calls for some seniors.
Angelo Roncallo and I can't think of his partners name ran the Riveria Pizza restaurant, wine and beer. Angelo's son was a Nassau county judge.
How about Rabbs and the Theater with those seats that made your back itch and you had to squirm around on the seat to try and relieve the itch. Forgot about that burger place across from Lil Eds with the flat car trains-plates with burgers on them rolling along the track. We went to the men's room one time and flushed a cherrybomb down the toilet but nothing happened. For a dollar you could get a small pizza pie at La Toscas down on 232-233st.
We used to go fishing at the twin ponds by S. And ice skated at the N. Remember Vallarios beer and soda with the frozen custard stand next door on merrick and Brookville Blvd. There was Busters gas station on Merrick and 229th St. Buster was a WW2 Marine Vet.
He used to show us his Colt 1911.45 which impressed us at that time. Next door was I think Killanes bar & grill where they had the fire. My father was an Auxillary fireman with Eng. 314 on Brookville Blvd. I sometimes enter V PIKE.COM and check out the Laurelton area at the street view but cannot get Mentone ave.
The photo vehicle probably did not go there. It is sad to look back and see the change thanks to the block busting that went on. Valley Stream, East Rockaway LI.

Livingston Regional HS, Berkeley Heights, NJ - Class of 1962 I was a member of the class that was graduated from JHS 59 in 1959. I found this site while searching the net for any recent news of one of the teachers who had the biggest influence on me, Mr.
Martin Groffman (of Marathon, FL in more recent years). I remember a number of the people from that same class whose comments here call up a lot of great memories of junior high. If any of you remember me from that class of 1959, it'll be as the only Asian kid in school during 8th and 9th grade -- after Betty Chang graduated. Like many whose names have appeared here, I was from elsewhere (my family lived on 118th Avenue across Merrick Blvd.
Albans Naval Hospital and I got to JHS 59 by way of PS 110 and PS 37). But Laurelton's impression on my life has been indelible, because exposure to the kids who lived there, by and large the smartest at JHS 59, saved me from any notion I might have had (coming up through the lower grades) that I could coast through school; and they, together with a very few really good teachers like Mr. Groffman, got me started on a real education. The family moved to Berkeley Heights, NJ, a couple of weeks after graduation in 1959, so I didn't go to AJHS but instead graduated in 1962 from a high school with a much longer name, then left for college in Berkeley, and except for a couple of years in India, have lived and worked in California ever since.

My mother passed away in an Eastern Airlines plane accident over Jones Beach in the early 60s. I have vivid memories of the Memorial Service at the LJC.
I remember Sherry Levinson, Jordan Levy, the Kaye brothers, The Kramers, The Schwartzs, the Margulies, the Weinstock family - all friends of my parents Murray and Roslyn. Stanley's store, the Chinese restaurant (every Thursday night), the bagel place.Green Acres, so many meomories. - Class of 1964 Currently living in Briarwood, NY My public school was PS 38 in Rosedale. I lived in Laurelton Terrace Garden Apartments from about 1950 to 1964. My old address was 235 04 131st Ave. I see from the previous website, most members lived furthur north than I, since the focus is on PS 156. Rest assured, all the nostalgia discussed are also part of my memories as well. Would it make sense to expand the PS 156 laurelton concept to PS 156 & PS 38?
After all, us southern Laurelton people are Laureltonites too. I enjoy reading everyone's memories. All good things to all of you. Greg Oliver, Patricia (Green) - – Springfield Gardens H.S.

I'll have to find time to write some memories of Laurelton but in the meantime, if anyone knows where to find Rabbi Howard Singer of the LJC that would be most helpful. Rabbi Singer certainly was a major influence in my life including why I live in Israel. I'm sending a photo and will try to send some more. I lived at 135-60 233 st. So I well remember that there was a candy store between 234th and 233rd on the south side of Merrick, closer to 233rd. It had all the candies, comic books (I remember when comics when up from $.10 to $.12), tobacco, milkshakes, egg creams, chocolate sodas, school supplies etc.
It was owned by the Kippels who were Holocaust survivors. I remember staring at the numbers on Mr. Kippel's arm. They lived in an apartment in the back of the store. I think they had two kids, maybe the son was Arthur.
They sold it to a man named Murray and we nicknamed him Mr. Why, I do not know. We always stopped off at the candy store on our way home from JHS 59. Keep up the great memories. Pernice, Vincent 'Vinny' - - Andrew Jackson H.S.
